I had this whole plan to write up separate Tokyo and Kyoto posts on the best vegan food we had, but we literally went to the same restaurants because they were SO good! So, instead this is a bit of a round up of the best vegan food we had in Japan!
Ain Soph. Journey in kyoto:
We ate here soo much, hence all the pictures. We had mushroom hayashi rice, taco rice, kara-age, crispy soy chicken burgers, a ripple cheese burger, soy cutlets, heavenly pancakes, matcha pancakes, and matcha ice cream. Oh. My. Gosh. The matcha ice cream was amazing. My jaw literally dropped when I had my first bite. The crispy soy chicken burger was the winner for us, we had like 3 or 4 of them in total lol. The matcha pancakes were dang good too.
Taiko Udon in Hiroshima:
We shared a large sized wakame udon and vegetable tempura. This restaurant isn’t fully vegan, but they have a vegan menu. The tempura was nice and crispy, and the udon was super good. They also gave us a little mochi type dessert with tea for free. They were very kind in this restaurant which made the experience even more enjoyable.
Matcha Stand Maruni in Tokyo:
This matcha shop is in Tsukiji Fish Market, and it was the absolute best matcha latte we’ve ever had. We got it with soy milk - I really love Japanese soy milk, it’s pretty different than what we have back home.
Shizen Bar Paprika Shokudou Vegan in OSAKA:
I got a soy pork dish; and lemme tell you, it was the BEST soy “meat” I’ve ever had ever. I remember the second I bit into it I said to Jerome, ‘are you sure his place is vegan?’ It was crazy good. I was and still am shocked.
T’s TanTan in Tokyo & Kyoto:
This is where we ate the most often. I love soup and ramen, so I would always pick T’s. Sheeesh, it was good. We had the gyozas, golden sesame ramen, black sesame ramen, shoyu ramen, tantan ramen, soy “beef”, and ice cream. The best dish I’d say is the golden sesame ramen.
They have a couple options for take away, and the soy beef is the best option.
Vermillion in Kyoto:
We randomly came across this restaurant after doing the Fushimi Mount Inari summit hike, and we almost didn’t go in. We weren’t very hungry, but their tomato soup called to us haha. And there’s definitely a reason it did because it was actually the bestbestbest tomato soup ever. We were like, whhhaaaaa?!
I’m so happy that we were able to find some really good vegan food and
drink during our trip. We went to other vegan restaurants and restaurants
with vegan options, but these were the best and most memorable ones.
When we go back to Japan, we’ll definitely be hitting up these places again!
